Project History

Who was involved?
Schools on the Move (SOTM) is a Department of Health funded programme designed by the Youth Sport Trust, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation, to help schools increase their pupils’ level of physical activity and awareness of the importance of physical activity in maintaining health and well-being.

What is it?
The SOTM programme is designed as a catalyst for change. It provides schools with a tool and focus to help promote more physical activity among pupils and aims to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity in maintaining health and well-being.

The SOTM website offers a variety of interactive features, ideas and support materials for both teachers and pupils, demonstrating how areas of school life can play a positive role in encouraging more young people to be active.

When did it take place?
The SOTM pilot programme was launched in October 2005 in 54 schools (primary, secondary and special) within 10 school sport partnerships across the country. The programme ran in 2006 – 2007 in a further 250 schools across the country and is now in its third year and is being rolled out to a further 300 new schools, focusing on those 9-13 year olds who are least active.
