A recent review of school PE lessons has found that pupils have been more keen to take part in sport because of the wide range of activities schools offer. Activities such as cheerleading, skateboarding and country dancing have attracted pupils who have disliked traditional team games, particularly young girls.
Since competitive games for 14 – 16 year olds stopped being compulsory in 2000, schools have started to offer activities such as tai chi, mountain biking, golf and yoga. As a result, more young people now understand the importance of taking regular exercise and eating a healthy diet.
